THE HISTORY OF FIFA
1872
The idea of organized international football is born. England vs. Scotland play the first official international match at Hamilton Crescent, Glasgow.
MAY 21, 1904
Belgium, Denmark, France, Netherlands, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland meet at 229 Rue Saint Honoré, Paris, to create a unified world governing body of football. Germany joins by telegram the same day.
1905
After initially rejecting the concept, England—home of the Football Association (est. 1863)—joins FIFA. Austria, and Italy also join during this period, totaling 11 member countries.
1906
Hungary joins FIFA.
1908
FIFA organises football at the London Olympics: the first successful international football tournament under FIFA's auspices. Great Britain wins gold.
1908
Finland and Norway join FIFA.
1910
Luxembourg, Scotland, Wales, and South Africa (withdrew 1924; rejoined 1952; suspended 1961–199220) join FIFA.
1911
Northern Ireland joins FIFA.
1912
Argentina becomes the first South American member of FIFA and Russia (rejoined as USSR 1946; suspended 2022) joins FIFA.
1913
Chile joins FIFA.
1914
Canada joins FIFA as the first North American member, and Portugal and the United States join as well.
1919
Yugoslavia (now multiple nations) joins FIFA.
1921
Paraguay joins FIFA.
1922
Latvia joins FIFA (rejoined 1992 after Soviet era).
1923
Brazil, Egypt (longest-serving African member), Estonia (rejoined 1992 after Soviet era), Ireland (republic of Ireland), Lithuania (rejoined 1992 after Soviet era), Poland, Romania, Turkey, and Uruguay join FIFA.
1924
Bulgaria joins FIFA.
1925
Thailand joins FIFA.
1926
Bolivia, Ecuador, and Peru join FIFA.
1927
Costa Rica and Greece join FIFA.
MAY 26, 1928
At the Amsterdam Congress, FIFA votes to create an international championship independent of the Olympics. Uruguay is awarded hosting rights for the inaugural tournament in recognition of their Olympic football dominance.
1929
Iceland, Israel, Japan, Mexico, and Suriname join FIFA.
1930
The Philippines join FIFA.
JULY 13, 1930
13 nations compete in the first World Cup. Uruguay defeats Argentina 4–2 in the final before 68,000 fans in Montevideo. The tournament becomes the blueprint for all that follows.
1931
China joins FIFA (withdrew 1958; rejoined 1980).
1934
The Second World Cup—Italy hosts and wins, defeating Czechoslovakia 2–1 after extra time. The tournament introduces the knockout format.
1938
Third World Cup—Italy wins their second consecutive title. The tournament is the last before World War II halts international football. The 1942 and 1946 editions are cancelled as Europe descends into conflict.
